Are We There Yet? vol. 230

On Sundays in The New York Times, there is a section called the Metropolitan Diary where residents write in with amusing stories. This past Sunday, a man wrote about a situation years ago when he worked at a clothing store. The store had a policy that men’s suits could be returned within a certain time frame “provided they hadn’t been altered or showed signs of wear . . .”

He recalled an incident when he was called to the counter where a customer was returning a suit purchased 10 days earlier. “It didn’t appear worn but seemed grimy and dirty, almost as if whoever had worn it had been rolling around in a flower bed.” He asked if the customer had purchased the suit, and he replied that his company had purchased it. When he asked about the company, the man handed him a card from a funeral home in the Bronx. As you can imagine, the writer thought of all the unsavory ways that suit may have been used and told the customer that they could not honor the return policy.

I think this was a situation where technically satisfying the rule didn’t match the spirit of the rule. The story ends with the customer’s parting line, “But it was only worn once.”

Take care and stay safe.
