Are We There Yet? vol. 232
I have followed Rohit Bhargava for years. His Non-Obvious Insights Blog is funny and informative, his books provide insights about marketing, innovation, and trends and he has been a keynote speaker for decades. I also know his parents who are wonderful people.
About two years ago, his non-obvious insights blog featured a segment on “Pre-bunking.” I had heard of the term debunking, which means to expose the falseness of an idea, myth, or belief. Pre-bunking is preemptively refuting false narratives, misinformation, manipulation techniques or the way I think of it, getting ahead of the lies.
As Rohit noted, “The one thing that has always been true about liars and manipulators is that their tactics are often quite predictable. As much as fact checking and the people who do that work are desperately needed, the opportunity for a concentrated effort around pre-bunking lies seems like something we should all support. . .”
While I agree that pre-bunking efforts should be welcomed, it appears that no one has done a very good job at it. It's been two years since his post on the topic, and lies, manipulation, and misinformation appear to be at all-time highs. I believe that part of the problem is that people are not as skeptical as they should be about what they read and hear. Until people themselves do the fact-checking and take the time to try to get to the truth, I believe that lies and misinformation will continue to be effective for those trying to gain an edge.
Take care and stay safe.
