Are We There Yet? vol. 240

Ina Garten is a well-known cookbook author and recently penned her memoir. I have to confess that while we have some of her cookbooks, I have not read her memoir and suspect that I never will. Then, why am I mentioning Ina Garten?

I was struck by the title of her memoir, “Be Ready When the Luck Happens.” My experience of people referring to luck is that there is usually some judgment embedded in the comment. People who may be envious about someone’s good fortune or that they did not “earn” whatever reward they received may say that a person is just lucky. Some who want to tie luck to merit may quote Samuel Goldwyn, who said, “The harder I work, the luckier I get.” I much prefer the sentiment behind being ready when the luck happens. Regardless of your station in life, education, or wealth, all of us can be ready.

But what does being ready actually mean? Merriam-Webster defines ready as prepared mentally or physically for some experience or action. To me, being ready when the luck happens goes a bit further. It means being open to new ideas and being curious. It means pursuing something beyond just the initial judgment and identifying opportunity where it might not be expected.

I try to not dismiss opportunities or anything where my initial thought is that it’s not possible or it’s just not something I could actually do. My decision making doesn’t need to be that quick, and I can take more time to explore. What I’ve learned in the planning business is that most people, including me, are very good at making quick, incorrect judgments. But some of the best things take a little exploration.

Take care and stay safe.

BOOK:

Generations: The Real Differences Between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers and Silents – and What They Mean for America’s Future by Jean M. Twenge

Upending the conventional theory that generational differences are caused by major events, Dr. Jean Twenge analyzes data on 39 million people from robust national surveys—some going back nearly a century—to show that changes in technology are the underlying driver of each generation’s unique makeup. In this revelatory work, Twenge outlines key shifts in attitudes and lifestyle choices that define each generation regarding gender, income, politics, race, sexuality, marriage, mental health, and much more.

Surprising, engaging, and informative, Generations “gets you thinking about how appreciating generational differences can, ironically, bring us together” (Angela Duckworth, New York Times bestselling author). It will forever change the way you view your parents, peers, coworkers, and children, no matter which generation you call your own.
