Are We There Yet? vol. 242

On a recent weekend, my daughter Isabel was home from school, and we drove over to CVS to get some items. As we were about to enter the store, a woman came out the door, struggling with her heavy bag. She was an older woman and moving very slowly and gingerly.

I asked her if she needed help carrying her bag, and as my daughter took the bag from her, she grabbed my hand so that we could walk her more quickly to her car. She seemed grateful for the help but somewhat embarrassed about requiring help. As we got to her car, she said something like, “I should be embarrassed, but after all, I am 95 years old.” The look of shock on my daughter’s face probably mirrored mine. As we left her and entered the store, my daughter said, “Should she be driving?”

My perspective shifted from concern for this woman's health to joy and hope that, at the age of 95, maybe I’ll be out grocery shopping and then driving myself home. To get there, I think I’ll need a combination of not only luck and genetics but also physical fitness and nutrition. At least I have some control over the latter two.

Take care and stay safe.

BOOK:

Death at the Sign of the Rook by Kate Atkinson

Welcome to Rook Hall. The stage is set. The players are ready. By night’s end, a murderer will be revealed.

In his sleepy Yorkshire town, ex-detective Jackson Brodie is staving off boredom and malaise. His only case is the seemingly tedious matter of a stolen painting. But Jackson soon uncovers a string of unsolved art thefts that lead him down a dizzying spiral of disguise and deceit to Burton Makepeace, a formerly magnificent estate now partially converted into a hotel hosting Murder Mystery weekends.

As paying guests, impecunious aristocrats and old friends collide, we are treated to Atkinson’s most charming and fiendishly clever mystery yet, one that pays homage to the masters of the genre—from Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers to the modern era of Knives Out and Only Murders in the Building.
