Are We There Yet? vol. 250

In 2014, Russian scientists were trying to save an endangered species; the Amur tiger, otherwise known as the Siberian tiger. In one instance, two unrelated cubs, Svetlaya and Boris, had been rescued in the wild as young cubs. The cubs were raised in captivity with the goal that they would be released back into the wild as part of a program to have more Siberian tigers along Russia’s border with China in the Pri-Amur region.

The scientists released the cubs about 100 miles apart in an effort to expand the territory over which the tigers were present. They were surprised by what happened next. A year after having been released, Boris walked over 120 miles in almost a straight line to find Svetlaya. Some months later, Svetlaya gave birth to a litter of cubs.

As the end of the year approaches, the story of Svetlaya and Boris reminds us of the power of family, loyalty, and the desire for companionship. We don’t know what motivated Boris to make the 120-mile trek, but I’d like to think that his desire to be with Svetlaya made him more resilient. It reminds us that when we are driven by a meaningful purpose, we can overcome obstacles, even those we might have otherwise thought were not possible. Happy New Year.

Take care and stay safe.
