Are We There Yet? vol. 253

The new year began with violence as we woke up that morning to learn that a terrorist had driven his car into a group of revelers in New Orleans, killing and injuring many. A week later, those living in Los Angeles found themselves in the path of numerous wildfires leading to 24 deaths to date and billions of dollars in damages. If you have found yourself more anxious and sleeping less well, it’s likely that these catastrophic events may have played a role.

At church this past week, my pastor, Reverend Alyse Viggiano spoke about the overwhelming anxiety that can occur when we see all of these events happening. She said that her process in these times is to focus on what she can control. Another approach is to respond rather than to react; she noted that the nuance between those words is important. In an online article by Dr. Laura Noel, Dr. Noel states that “reacting is an instinctive, emotional response to a situation. It’s often impulsive and can be influenced by our past experiences or fears. On the other hand, responding is a thoughtful and deliberate action. It involves considering the situation, weighing the options, and making a conscious decision.” A response requires a pause and gives one time to process the situation.

If we can focus on what we control and can respond rather than react to the events occurring around us, we may find that our anxiety levels will decrease. We also may find that taking the time to respond leads to more consistent and better decision-making.

Take care and stay safe.
