Are We There Yet? vol. 261
On February 21st, a client, friend, and generally great man, Kyu Sik Lee, passed away at the age of 87. In my years working with him, I knew Mr. Lee as a kind, generous soul with a work history that included being a distinguished Senior Economist at The World Bank where, as noted in his obituary, he led multi-year infrastructure development and research projects in Asia, Africa, and South America.
Although what I have mentioned above would be sufficient to signify a life well lived, at the celebration of his life last Saturday, I learned even more about the man he was. Speaker after speaker defined his kindness in greater detail, showing a man who would do anything to help his friends as well as non-friends. Friends of the family spoke about his generosity of spirit and his empathetic nature, including getting to know each person for who they were and devoting his full energy to those conversations with them.
While his work life defines a great man, his private life shows an even greater man. Don’t let anyone tell you that empathy doesn’t matter or is overrated. Mr. Lee is exactly who we should all emulate, and he will be greatly missed.
Take care and stay safe.
BOOK:
Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner
Called a “magnificently crafted story . . . brimming with wisdom” by Howard Frank Mosher in The Washington Post Book World, Crossing to Safety has, since its publication in 1987, established itself as one of the greatest and most cherished American novels of the twentieth century. Tracing the lives, loves, and aspirations of two couples who move between Vermont and Wisconsin, it is a work of quiet majesty, deep compassion, and powerful insight into the alchemy of friendship and marriage.
