Are We There Yet? vol. 264

Last week, a group of Saint Agnes Catholic School students were on a field trip at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore with their science teacher, TJ O’Leary, and parent chaperones including a friend of mine, Christine Klauder. As the group was breaking for lunch on the steps that lead down to the water, TJ noticed a 5- or 6-year-old boy sprinting after some seagulls and tumbling into the water. Seconds later, the boy’s dad jumped in after him. TJ saw that both of them were struggling in the water, unable to swim. Without hesitation, TJ jumped into the water. He grabbed the boy first and brought him back to safety.  He then went back out for the dad, who was completely panicked and fighting against him. That was when Christine waded into the water and helped TJ to pull the struggling parent out of the harbor.

The boy and his dad were taken to the hospital, and both are fine. TJ and Christine also were okay, although they too had to go to the hospital to be decontaminated from potential bacteria in the harbor.

This story is another example of people selflessly helping other people in need. It’s a good lesson for all of us. When asked what she hoped the students learned from this episode, Christine said "If anything, I hope they look for opportunities to be better citizens and help people when they need it, and not to stand by and think someone else will take care of it. You know, you can be part of the solution."

Take care and stay safe.

BOOK:

Audition by Katie Kitamure

Two people meet for lunch in a Manhattan restaurant. She’s an accomplished actress in rehearsals for an upcoming premiere. He’s attractive, troubling, young—young enough to be her son. Who is he to her, and who is she to him? In this compulsively readable, brilliantly constructed novel, two competing narratives unspool, rewriting our understanding of the roles we play every day – partner, parent, creator, muse – and the truths every performance masks, especially from those who think they know us most intimately.
