With the war in Ukraine occupying all our minds, I thought I would tell a lighthearted story which, while frustrating to the participant, may bring a smile to the face of the reader. At least that is my hope.

I want to pay tribute to Dr. Paul Farmer who died this week at the age of 62. I didn’t know much about Dr. Farmer except what my wife told me about him when, in preparing for a mission trip to Haiti several years ago, she read Tracy Kidder’s book, Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World.
This past weekend, there was a lot of excitement surrounding the Super Bowl. I know I had hopes of a great game, hilarious commercials and an entertaining half-time show.
This week marks the 100th edition for what started out as a three-week project because our Covid lockdown would only last 3 weeks. This is an example of why I don’t make predictions.
This week, I read a story about a message in a bottle. Joanna Buchan was an eight-year-old Scottish schoolgirl living in Aberdeenshire Scotland in 1996. For a school project, she wrote a letter describing her life in Scotland including facts such as “living in a big house,” collecting pogs, and her love of things including her dog, Dougal and the book, Charlotte’s Web. She stuffed the letter in a bottle and dropped it into the sea.
I assume that everyone has heard about Boris Johnson’s difficulty in knowing whether a gathering for celebration where everyone brings their own alcoholic beverages constitutes a party.
